As an assembler in the Optical Business Unit, you will work among of team of individuals assembling products for our customers. As part of our LEAN Manufacturing business strategy, you will be located in a work “cell” assembling a variety of components ranging in complexity throughout the day. Works under general supervision. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
-Must be able to understand written work instructions and schematics for a wide range of products to properly assemble the final product to the highest of quality standards and with zero scrap or rework.
-Assemble components and products of varying size and complexity that includes cleaning, inspecting and testing of assembled components and assemblies.
-Meets the expected assembly timelines that are outlined on the production orders
-Ask questions when instructions are not understood or clear
-Remain focused on the production orders and assembly responsibilities throughout the day
-Performs any combination of the above duties from the functions above. Cross-train on various functions in order to provide flexibility and support across production operations.
-Where necessary, set up or calibrate equipment, maintain accurate records, prepare reports for identification purposes such as test reports, and move material to and from work areas.

Must maintain a safe and clean working environment through compliance with procedures, policies and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
-Experience with soldering capability in a similar position preferred.

Education:
-High School diploma or equivalent is required, and any additional technical education is a plus.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
-Strong attention to detail -Strong ability to work with components that may be smaller than 1/8 of an inch; must have a steady hand with excellent dexterity and eye-hand coordination
-Laser and safety knowledge.

  • Coordination of a community-based coalition, recruit and maintain a diverse coalition membership with local and state partners through in-person and virtual activities and continually broaden expertise in the area of substance use disorder with a focus on environmental strategies
  • Represent the Coalition through professional associates locally, statewide and nationally and assist coalition members in conducting annual strategic planning and guide the Coalition to develop a comprehensive action plan
  • Develop and implement data collection methods, tools, and evaluation measures for coalition activities and associated projects in conjunction with coalition members and coordinate and facilitate coalition meetings and communicate effectively with members to promote collaboration, negotiation, and problem solving
  • Develop marketing and media materials, campaigns associated with coalition and community partners and continuously evaluate coalition effectiveness and coalition strategic plan

  • Promote coalition platforms via press releases, advertising, media, fliers, community events, and other means deemed beneficial for increasing awareness and conduct/coordinate parent, youth, and community presentations on substance abuse topics as needed on behalf of the Coalition. Manage special projects for the Coalition and Agency.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Foundation of ATOD knowledge regarding evidence based prevention and treatment. Excellent verbal communication skills including one-on-one, public speaking and informative presentations as well as excellent written communication skills, including ability to contribute to newsletters, curriculum development and grant applications
  • Responsible, dependable, takes initiative and always strives to exceed expectations. Ability to work well independently, as part of a team, and in diverse professional and community environments

QC Technician, Thorlabs, Newton, NJ

The position in the coating lab effectively assures manufacturing compliance to Thorlabs ISO9001 and MIL-PRF-13830B quality standards protecting customers. Inspectors perform visual and dimensional inspection of precision parts and make quick, accurate pass/fail decisions on many types of optics including filters, mirrors, crystals, prisms, and lenses.  Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations. 

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Identify non-conformances of in-process and finished components through established inspection methods.
  • Ability to perform extremely detailed visual inspections on intricate and delicate parts occasionally performed under microscopes.
  • Perform inspections efficiently with attention to detail.
  • Report measurement metrics to keep track of efficiency and quality.
  • Generate spreadsheets for data collection.
  • Work professionally within a team environment.
  • Measure and compare mechanical dimensions to manufacturing drawings using typical metrology.
  • Inspectors may occasionally be called upon to perform tasks including running the following:
    • Spectrophotometer to confirm and interpret spectral scans
    • OptoSpheric lens measurement system to verify focal lengths
    • NewView to measure roughness with sub-angstrom accuracy
    • Zygo GPI/Verifire/mini XP to measure precision optical parts for form error
    • Laser engravers to add part numbers and other identifying marks to products
  • Reconcile final inspection documentation for shipments.
  • Interact with vendor or source inspector as needed.
  • Assist with product flow through the department.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in quality control function in manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Optics manufacturing inspection experience preferred.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to learn, understand, and effectively apply sampling plans.
  • Skilled in the usage of hand held measuring tools and devices including but not limited to calipers and micrometers.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to operate in both individual and team environments.
  • Capable of reading mechanical drawings and interpret dimensional tolerances.
  • Adaptable to process and procedure changes.
  • Capacity to convert from imperial to metric measurements.
  • Ability to meet department standards for productivity and quality.
  • Computer literacy using MS Office, Outlook and ERP software is mandatory.
  • Must have the ability to cross train on all areas of the department, including but not limited to visual and dimensional inspection, data entry, laser engravers, and metrology equipment.
  • High attention to detail.

Glass Fabrication Technician, Thorlabs, Newton, NJ

The glass fabrication technician fabricates ultra-high purity glasses by preparing powders, mixing batches, and using melting and casting procedures. Provides support to glass fabrication by troubleshooting. Assists with the fabrication of new glass products. Works under the direction of Fiber Manufacturing Mananger. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Incoming inspection of all raw materials to manufacture glass products.
  • Maintaining Inventory of all raw materials:
    • Ordering gases
    • Powder inventory
    • Chemical inventory
    • All glass fabrication mechanical parts
  • Proper use of chemicals for glass fabrication
  • Grind and prepare powders
  • Mix powders to exact specifications
  • Weigh powder batches to exact specifications
  • Clean tools and glass melting crucibles
  • Clean glass melting furnace twice daily
  • Assembly and use of glass molds
  • Inspection of preform quality to process specifications
  • Proper recording of all data related to the fabrication of glass drawn products into the database
  • Perform other BU essential functions and participate in assigned cross training.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Two years manufacturing experience

Education:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficiency in basic computer use (Word, Excel) and communication tools
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic math skills to include: decimals, unit conversions (standard/metric).
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards.
  • Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities.
